LA's most popular and longest-running Outdoor Screening Series "Cinespia" returns to two famous Hollywood locations this summer: the Hollywood Forever Cemetery and LA Historic Park. But not only that, Cinespia has put together special screenings commemorating Pride month this June.

Having officially kicked off with "Jurassic Park" on Friday May 13th at the LA Historic Park, there are Memorial Day screenings of both the gay classic "Mean Girls" and the fan-favorite "Back to the Future" on the horizon. The following week brings "Twilight" (which has gained some cult status in recent years), and the all-star horror comedy "American Psycho" based on queer author Bret Easton Ellis' divisive novel.

And then there's Pride. "We've been celebrating Pride at Cinespia for as long as I can remember," states Cinespia founder John Wyatt, "and we're excited this year to partner with LA Pride for a screening of 'But I'm a Cheerleader.'" The indie-classic stars LGBTQ+ ally Natasha Lyonne ("Russian Doll") in the biting comedy about a cheerleader realizing she likes women.

But not only that, to celebrate gay icon Judy Garland's 100th birthday, Cinespia will be showing her most enduring film, "The Wizard of Oz." There's no more perfect a place to go over the rainbow with Judy than the cemetery where Garland was laid to rest. It will be a special night for sure.

When friends who have never been to Cinespia ask me what to expect, I never fail to get giddy. It's literally one of my favorite summer activities and a fantastic way to spend time with a group of friends or a snuggly date.

Whenever I mention that you first wait in line before even getting in, I'm generally met with a sneer. But what I tell them is that this part of the night is one of the most fun. There is a large lawn in front of the cemetery with wide lanes to line up in. Everyone spreads their blankets and chairs out, breaks out the wine and cheese, and enjoys time with their friends. It's one of the few times in LA where phones aren't being stared at constantly.

Once the venue lets the attendees in (it can get up to 4000 people), everyone heads the large lawn situated next to a mausoleum where the films are projected in hi-definition and the crystal-clear sound. Viewing is perfect no matter where you sit. "Seats" are whatever you bring! Blankets, low-back chairs, and picnics are all welcome. (Some get very elaborate with flameless candles, low to the ground tables, and more.) World-famous DJs are always on hand before and after the film, spinning themed jams and getting everyone ready for a night at the movies!

Beer, wine, popcorn, and some food are available, along with the ever-popular photo booth where guests can take pictures of themselves in elaborate sets themed specifically for the movie they are attending. (I have an entire photo album of these pics!)

The weekly summer event is attended by celebrities and locals alike, and sometimes introduced by the stars of the film themselves! No one can forget Elizabeth Berkley offering us her signature dance move at the screening of "Showgirls," or Jane Fonda sending a video message before "Barbarella."

Truly the best Hollywood event in the most "Hollywood" of spaces, "Cinespia" is in its 21st year and with support from Amazon Studios, promises to be its best one yet! LA has pride in Cinespia, and Cinespia has Pride for the LGBTQ+ community. Come celebrate all month long!
