The NBC series "Smash," a series created by playwright Theresa Rebeck (and based on the novel by Garson Kanin) about the nuts and bolts of mounting a new Broadway musical, only lasted for two seasons — but now, true to its creative DNA and its subject matter, the show is becoming a Broadway musical itself.

Deadline reported that series producers Neil Meron and Marc Shaiman, who are, respectively, producing and composing for the new musical, took to Instagram to share photos of the musical's cast in a reading.

"Last week, Robert Greenblatt, myself and an unnamed producing partner, who has many incredible movie credits on his resume, proudly assembled this creative team that is breathing new life into our TV series — amazing book by writers Rick Elice and Bob Martin, the iconic score and then some by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and musical director extraordinaire Stephen Oremus..."

Among the cast, Meron reported, were "Smash" series veterans Megan Hilty and Krysta Rodriguez.

Deadline noted that the identity of the "unnamed producing partner: with the "incredible movie credits" is likely Steven Spielberg, who was also an executive producer of the TV series. Spielberg appeared in one of the photos Meron posted, along with himself and Greenblatt.

Shaiman, in his own post, shared: "Smash — The Musical," is "a new Broadway show that takes place, well, to be au courant, in a Smash 'multiverse.'"

The composer posted a video that included snippets from several of the show's songs.

Added the composer: "Surrounded by a hysterical script by @bobmartin9000 & Rick Elice, @scottwittman & I got to hear our songs for Bombshell (the Marilyn Monroe Musical we wrote for Smash) come alive again, with a brilliant gathering of performers."

"Shaiman writes that he and Wittman wrote a new song for the reading ('maybe more to come')," Deadline added. The television series was notable for its original compositions.

Saying there are "no concrete plans yet," Shaiman nonetheless teased, "I think I can safely say that, unless the world ends soon, you really will get to see Smash on Broadway sooner than later!"

"Smash" aired on NBC between 2012 and 2013 for a total of 32 episodes, and featured a large cast that included "Will & Grace" star Debra Messing, "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Jack Davenport, Tony Award-winning "Hamilton" actor Leslie Odom, Jr., and "Transparent" actor Anjelica Huston.
