Hawaii Five-0: The First Season

Jim Halterman READ TIME: 2 MIN.

While it would be easy to chalk up the reboot of the classic "Hawaii Five-0" series as merely a hunk-fest for Aussie Alex O'Loughlin, thankfully, the action packed CBS series is so much more. (That doesn't mean O'Loughlin is any less hunky, mind you)

In the series, Steve McGarrett (O'Loughlin, donning an American accent and stripping off his shirt just enough to keep us satisfied) heads up the new Five-0 team when he investigates the murder of his father. The team consists of Danny "Danno" Williams (Scott Caan), a former Honolulu Police detective, Chin Ho Kelly ("Lost" star Daniel Dae Kim) and Chin Ho's cousin, Kono Kalakaua ("Battlestar Galactica"'s Grace Park). While each week brings a new crime for the team to solve, there is also the thread of McGarrett tracking his father's killer (who ends up being the villain Wo Fat) as well as Danno's lingering feelings for his ex-wife and Chin Ho trying to clear his damaged name in the police force.

As the first season comes to DVD with all 24-episodes, extras include deleted scenes, gag reel, an exploration into the legacy of the series, behind-the-scenes of making the pilot, an island tour with star Grace Park, footage of the show's introduction at Comic Con, a look at the reimagining of the iconic theme song, and cast and crew commentary of select episodes.

The series is solid, balances the action, crime fighting with a bit of humor and sexiness (as hot as O'Loughlin is, Caan and Kim (and Park) are pretty darn sexy in their own right. The series also manages to utilize the gorgeous landscape of Hawaii effectively.
