Gays Caused That Flood!: Conservative Writer Angered Over 'Noah' Inaccuracies
EDGE READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Once again, Christians blame bad weather on the gays.
The uproar over the film "Noah" continued last week when conservative Christian writer Don Feder blasted the Russell Crowe pre-summer biblical era blockbuster for what he considers pro-environmental politics and for not placing the blame on the flood on gays.
In an article titled "'Noah' - The Bible Meets The Lorax" that is at times almost inadvertently worthy of The Onion, Feder, a former writer for the Boston Herald describes the Noah film:
In "Noah," the environmentalist fable, we learn that bad people (descendants of Cain) build cities, eat meat and make weapons. (They probably belong to an Antediluvian NRA.) They also engage in strip mining, in the process turning the earth into a barren wasteland that looks like Afghanistan without the amenities.
The good people are vegans who live in tents, don't make much of anything, and are few in number, probably because they practice family planning. One of many unanswered questions of "Noah" the movie: If the good people (descendants of Seth) don't eat meat, where did they get the animal skins they wear? Presumably, these are the pelts of critters who committed suicide after contemplating mankind's speciesism.
"Noah" is anti-religious, pushes population control, and is an allegorical warning about the coming cataclysm which we're told will be caused by global warming. In the movie, God is always referred to as "the Creator." Hollywood has a problem with the G-word.
Feder then goes on to suggest what he considers the biblical reason behind the Great Flood:
Scripture is a bit vague on the reasons for the flood. The Bible explains: "Now the earth was corrupt before God. And the earth became full of robbery. And God saw the earth, and behold it had become corrupted." (Genesis 6:11-12). ??Corrupt in what way? Would God destroy the world over larceny? Later in Genesis, the Canaanite cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are blotted out, this time by fire, over sexual deviancy. The term "sodomite" doesn't refer to someone who knocks-over convenience stores. ??Try to imagine Hollywood making a movie that inveighs against sexual immorality, when the entertainment industry goes Lady Gaga over gayness and presents cohabitation, adultery and abortion as lifestyle choices.
Feder is not the first conservative voice to object to "Noah," whose story is an adaptation of the profit who is shared in Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths. According to the NY Daily News, the film was banned in several Middle Eastern countries including Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE, due to pressure from fundamentalist Islamic groups.
The film and its marketing materials carry the following disclaimer:
"The film is inspired by the story of Noah. While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values, and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide. The biblical story of Noah can be found in the book of Genesis."
