Soggy in Cleveland: Rain Causes Postponement of Some Gay Games Events

After a spectacular opening ceremony that featured a special message from President Barack Obama and live performances by Greg Louganis, Lance Bass, the Pointer Sisters, Broadway's original "Annie," Andrea McArdle and "Glee"'s Alex Newell, the 9th Gay Games in Cleveland got off to a soggy start with many outdoor events relocated or postponed due to inclement weather.

Two days of on and off rain in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio this week has had Gay Games 9 organizers working overtime rescheduling and relocating outdoor events as well as notifying thousands of fans and participants of last minute changes.

Competitors in sailing and 10K marathon running took Monday off as rain caused both events to either get cancelled or rescheduled. Tennis matches were moved from Cleveland State University's Malaga Courts to indoor facilities at the Cleveland and Mayfield Village Racquet Clubs. All softball games were rained out on Monday.

In the spirit of "the show (or in this case 'games') must go on," game organizers have rescheduled softball, which as of this writing, will be played Tuesday afternoon on recently "de-sogged" fields. Monday's 10K Marathon has been rescheduled for 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday.

According to Weather.com, Tuesday calls for 90% chance of Thunderstorms and Wednesday calls for 50% morning showers.

Organizers are continually evaluating weather forecasts and current conditions. Any schedule changes or news will be posted on the website and shared on Gay Games' Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The 2014 Gay Games presented by the Cleveland Foundation is one of the most inclusive sports and cultural festivals in the world and comes to Cleveland and Akron, 9-16 August. The Games are open to all adults - regardless of sexual orientation or athletic ability.
