Haters Gonna Hate: Christians Aren't Buying Wal-Mart's High Score on AFA Copy Cat Index
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
The anti-gay religious right has never been known for its originality. So, it comes as no surprise that the anti-gay hate group American Family Association has ripped off the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) to create their own version of the gay rights group's Corporate Equality Index.
"This fall, American Family Association's new Corporate Religious Liberty Index will educate the country about companieswhichhonor religious liberty-and those that don't," writes AFA's president Tim Wildmon.
AFA claims that their version of HRC's Corporate Equality Index is "in direct response to the growing threats against religious liberty in the U.S.."
According to AFA, the hate group's Corporate Religious Liberty Index (CRLI), "is a short, simple questionnaire that seeks to gauge the importance of religious liberty for the nation's major companies."
AFA's survey includes seven questions that deal with corporate policies and practices. As companies take the survey, the answers are scored, compiled and assigned an "index number" that will indicate whether or not companies are favorable, indifferent or antagonistic to religious liberty. The index number will fall on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 indicating full support for religious freedom.
Although the seven questions at the core of AFA's CRLI remain shrouded in mystery to the general public, they announced last week that the world's biggest retailer Wal-Mart received a perfect score.
"We're thankful to Wal-Mart for taking the lead for American Family Association's Corporate Religious Liberty Index," said AFA President Tim Wildmon. "We know that Wal-Mart values families, and its commitment to religious freedom is evident in its actions and in the answers provided in the CRLI survey. AFA hopes that Wal-Mart will set the pace for other companies to weigh in on how they also value religious freedom, especially as religious liberties are being taken away daily across our nation."
It bears noting that Wal-Mart was also scored by HRC for their Corporate Equality Index. The mega-big box store received a score of 90 for their record of supporting LGBT rights. None of this got past AFA's supporters who were quick to dismiss Wildmon's accolade of the retail giant.
"I was told that WalMart had been a sponsor of the LGBT parade in NYC after the Supreme Court's decision that same sex marriages were ok," wrote AFA supporter Della Foster. "Was I misinformed? Please let me know as I've been avoiding them ever since I heard that."
"Walmart is in FULL support of LGBT rights and same-sex marriage. How in the world do they score a 100 on AFA survey??" wrote a very adamant AFA supporter named "Natalie" "Something just doesn't add up... One thing I'm FOR SURE of though. STILL not shopping at Walmart!!!!"
AFA supporter Randy Posey had this to say:
"I am a member of Warrenton Independent Baptist Church in Vicksburg, MS in Warren County. We hold fast to the KJV BIBLE ( BASIC INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE LEAVING EARTH ) and Walmart appears to be bending to the socially accepted norm which, in my eyes, leads straight to HELL to quote Bobby Jindal. [...] We are truly in the Last of The Last Times ! Are YOU ready?"
