'Souper' Saturday Benefits Soup Kitchen in Provincetown

The Soup Kitchen In Provincetown (SKIP) will host its annual "Souper" Saturday lunch on Saturday, December 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Tin Pan Alley in Provincetown. The public is invited to enjoy hearty soups provided by more than two-dozen local restaurants and other businesses.

Throughout the event, a variety of hot soups will be available at Tin Pan Alley for a donation of $5 per serving. Tin Pan Alley is located at 269 Commercial St, Provincetown, directly across from Town Hall.

This year, quarts of cold soup will also be available at the Firehouse across the street at 254 Commercial Street. SKIP merchandise, including mugs, tee shirts, caps, water bottles and oven mitts will be for sale at the Firehouse as well. They make great holiday gifts!

"This popular annual event brings SKIP much-needed funding to help our many volunteers operate a remarkable community resource," said Daniel Elias, chairman of the SKIP board of directors. "It's also a great way to warm up on a winter afternoon or take a break from your holiday shopping."

Weekdays from November through April, SKIP serves hot, nutritious meals at the Methodist Church at 20 Shank Painter Road. Open to all, guests begin gathering as early as noon for the 12:30 p.m. lunch, spending time with friends or browsing the adjoining thrift shop. Many linger afterward for socializing with a cross-section of area residents. "The daily lunch can fill the gap in a winter economy that stretches the budgets of people whose incomes are seasonal," said Elias.

SKIP will serve an estimated 13,000 meals this winter. "Besides offering a place for the delicious food our volunteers prepare and serve each day, the soup kitchen helps build a sense of community that can be even more important during the winter months, when people sometimes feel isolated and even marginalized," said Elias.
